Sun or Masculine Energy

Inside each of us is our prana, or life’s energy. There are two energies, masculine or sun and feminine or moon, that are always available to us regardless of our gender. The feminine energy is creative and love based. The masculine is pure consciousness and is also love based. These too opposing energies help us to stay balanced.

What is Sun Energy?

The sun is the ruler of the solar system. As such, sun, or masculine, energy is the driving force of creation. This energy sparks change or transformation. You can harness this masculine energy through self-discipline of the mind and body. Masculine energy is assertive, active, and authoritative. It is about doing and achieving results.

Masculine Energy Characteristics

Sun energy is associated with strength, leadership, and power. The focus is on acting. This energy is also about taking responsibility for your actions and not blaming others. Masculine energy is rational and logical. It wants homeostasis.

If you have excess sun energy, you may be too dominant or controlling. Characteristics include seeming pushy, aggressive, overbearing and you will do anything to get what you want. You can also become a workaholic and eventually too much sun energy will burn you out.

If you are deficient in this energy, you may lack purpose and direction. You may also blame others for things that happen in your life instead of taking responsibility.

When you have a balance of sun and moon energy, you are confident and compassionate. You can be independent and still be open to receiving love.

Sun Energy History

The sun and its energy have long been acknowledged in many different cultures and ancient texts. Some religious and spiritual traditions have the sun as the symbol of supreme cosmic energy or God. These are usually portrayed as a father figure or male deity. Masculine archetypes can be found in Hinduism, Greek Mythology, and Christianity.

The Sun and Yoga History

Several ancient yogic texts use solar symbolism. In the Vedas, the sun is the supreme deity. It says that we are children of the sun and each one of us has a universal light of consciousness within ourselves. To obtain pure consciousness we must ultimately learn to grow the light within us. The Sun inside us is our true selves and the darkness is the ego and outside world.

In the Upanishads, the sun chants Om when it moves in the sky. Mantra Yoga uses the sun as the source of light as well as sound and mantra.

Tantric Yoga uses the sun to identify with the heart. Hatha Yoga the sun is used for the solar plexus, or third Chakra, fire. Raja Yoga uses the sun as Atman, the self of the Universe.

Shiva

Shiva, a Hindu deity, is associated with the rising Sun. He represents the energy of the universe and is inside of every living thing. He is also called the destroyer. As he destroyed things, he helped to transform and create new things.

Masculine Energy in the Energetic Body

Nadis are energetic pathways that prana, or our life’s energy, moves through in the body. Pingala nadi is located on the right side of the physical body. The right side of the body is your masculine or solar energetic side. It rules fire, heat, and activity. It regulates your sympathetic nervous system, or your fight or flight response. Pingala nadi controls your left-brain functions which is more analytical.

The Sun Stands Still

The Summer Solstice marks the first day of summer and is the longest day of the year with the shortest night. Solstice means “the sun stands still” which is what appears to happen from our view on Earth. Spiritually the summer solstice is a time to embrace your authenticity, confidence, and enlightenment.

Astrological Meaning of the Summer Solstice

From an astrological perspective, the summer solstice starts the beginning of Cancer season. Use this time to look inward and reflect on your past to determine how you would like to move forward in your life. It is an invitation to work on your future while honoring the lineage that came before you.

Much love & health,

Carrie
