Inside each of us is our prana, or life’s energy. There are two energies, masculine or sun and feminine or moon, that are always available to us regardless of our gender. The feminine energy is creative and love based. The masculine is pure consciousness and is also love based. These too opposing energies help us to stay balanced. Unfortunately, in the modern world with our busy lives, most of us live in our masculine energy.
What is Moon or Feminine Energy?
Moon, or feminine, energy asks you to slow down, to be in the present moment, and reconnect with yourself. This divine energy that is inside you connects you to your emotions and intuition. It can help you realize your life’s purpose and find joy and true happiness.
Feminine Energy Characteristics
As opposed to our masculine or sun energy of strength, leadership, and power, feminine energy is associated with being creative, caring, loving, nurturing, and easeful. It is also about finding playfulness and joy in your life. With this energy you make choices to enjoy your life and have fun! Feminine energy deals with your emotions and pleasure.
Moon energy is about knowing how to receive and accept. It is about ‘being’ as opposed to forcing or ‘making’ something happen. In this energy, you make choices from your heart instead of your head. It gives you emotional strength and taps into your right-brain functioning. Tapping into this energy, you are cooperative and compassionate. You also use your intuition to make decisions.
When you are out of balance with your feminine energy, you are overly emotional and irrational. The opposite may be true as well and you have a hard time expressing your emotions. Instead of allowing yourself to receive, you give too much. You may have dysfunctional relationships due to codependency. Also, you can have a victim mindset.
Moon Symbolism
It has long been said that the moon holds magical or mystical powers. Many cultures have worshipped the moon as a god or goddess that rule the night’s sky and the tides. The moon’s phases control the rise and fall of the ocean. This symbolizes life’s ups and downs. In astrology, the moon is said to affect moods, behavior, and personality traits.
Due to the moon’s different phases, it is also associated with birth, growth, and renewal (see the section below on the moon’s phases and its energy). The feminine connection is made with the different stages of a woman’s life from menstruation to pregnancy to childbirth. Menstruation is sometimes referred to as a woman’s ‘moon cycle’.
The Divine Feminine and Yoga History
Shakti
Shakti is the female counterpart of Shiva, or pure consciousness and masculine energy. In Hindu culture the Goddess Shakti is the divine mother and goddess of creation. She is the embodiment of divine feminine energy that resides in you no matter what gender you were born. Shakti means energy, potency, strength, and power.
With divine feminine energy, you can have strength and compassion simultaneously. Tapping into your feminine shakti energy, you can form deeper connections with friends and family, express your emotions, and care for yourself and others. This energy is always accessible to you.
Shakti energy fuels Kali, Goddess of Destruction. This energy is said to come from the moon and it keeps life on earth in constant change. Kali’s destruction forces change and transformation. This makes way for new things to grow and flourish.
Kundalini
In Kundalini yoga, Shakti is symbolized as a snake at the base of your spine that lays dormant until a spiritual awakening. She lives in Chakra 2, Svadhisthana, which deals with emotions. Yoga keeps your chakras, or energy centers, unblocked so your energy can move freely. Shakti energy travels up through the central channel that connects the main chakras.
Vedic Astrology
In Vedic astrology, the moon cycles are said to give key spiritual lessons. It represents the human mind in constant flux as it tries to move its way through the human experience.
